The program included discussion of growth and planning

Dennis Gilkey, CEO of Gilkey Organization and a member of the Century Commission for a Sustainable Florida, recently gave a presentation entitled “Regional Perspectives from the Century Commission” at the Heartland 2060 visioning workshop at South Florida Community College.

The workshop, attended by government officials and staff, various nonprofits and citizens, was aimed at bringing the “Heartland,” or interior Florida counties, together as a region to discuss growth and planning opportunities.

Gilkey spoke about the history and purpose of the 15-member Century Commission and addressed concepts for sustainable development in the Heartland region.

The Century Commission for a Sustainable Florida was established by the Florida Legislature in 2005 to envision the future of the state; consider laws and regulations that accommodate population growth while maintaining quality of life; serve as a repository for “community-building” ideas; and address specific growth management issues.

Members of the Century Commission are appointed by the governor, the speaker of the Florida House and the president of the Florida Senate.
