The Naples Bay mixed-use development earns kudos in the "unfinished" category

The Docks on Fifth, a mixed-use development located on Naples Bay, has received a Design Award in the “Unbuilt” category from the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Florida Southwest Chapter.

The project was submitted by Gora McGahey Associates in Architecture (www.gora-mcgahey.com).

The 42,000 square foot complex includes three buildings – a dock storage facility for 104 boats, a dock master’s office and office/retail space. The design meets site challenges presented by access, the triangular shape and proportions of the site.

The boat storage facility uses articulated massing and rich materials to break down the massive feeling of a typical “boat barn.”

When complete, the Docks on Fifth will serve as an East-West Gateway to Naples’ Fifth Avenue. The public will take advantage of waterfront access and the opportunity to interact with public art.

The Docks on Fifth is being designed to meet Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) – CS Gold Certification.standards. In keeping with these standards, all landscaping will be native material requiring no irrigation. Among the other steps being taken to meet LEED certification standards:

• Lighting design reduces night sky light pollution and varies intensity to take advantage of daylight harvesting and energy reduction.

• Waterless urinals and low flow plumbing fixtures reduce water use and wastewater generation.

• Ultra high efficiency, multiple zone heating and cooling equipment reduces energy consumption and provides increased individual comfort and control.

• Materials containing high recycled and certified wood content, as well as locally produced products, will reduce pollution and waste.

• Low-emitting materials will be used on the interior improving indoor air quality.

• The sensitive use of high performance glazing will provide multiple day lighting opportunities and views to the exterior from the majority of habitable space.

Gregg Development of Naples, Inc. is developing The Docks on Fifth. Bruce T. Gora is the principal-in charge for Gora-McGahey, and Fabian Behague is the project manager. Construction on the project is anticipated to begin in July of 2008.
