Sen. Burt Saunders and Dennis Gilkey (left) will speak at Thursday's event The public is invited to a legislative update on Thursday to learn about environmental preservation and conservation as well as new standards for energy-efficient buildings and renewable-energy sources.

The program is being presented by the Florida Southwest Chapter of the American Institute of Architects, in collaboration with Florida Gulf Coast University, Continuing Education and Off-Campus Programs.

The session will feature comments from state Sen. Burt L. Saunders (R-Naples), who will provide an update regarding his work as chairman of the Senate Committee on Environmental Preservation and Conservation. Also speaking is Dennis Gilkey, CEO of Gilkey Organization and a commissioner of the Century Commission for a Sustainable Florida; he will discuss Century Commission recommendations and highlight ideas for the design of sustainable buildings and communities in the region.

The event begins with a continental breakfast at 8 a.m. in the Student Union Ballroom at the main campus of Florida Gulf Coast University. For cost information or to register, please call 239-590-1095.
